If you are planning to foster or adopt, you will need a GP to provide you with a fostering and adoption medical (a CoramBAAF Adult Health Report AH1) that will assess your current and long term health for suitability to become a fosterer or adoptive parent.
You also need a review every 2 years which takes place in the form of a further GP consultation and the completion of the CoramBAAF Adult Health Update Report AH2.
You can view your medical form and what’s included here. Please note these are only samples and your agency will provide you with a copy of the form.
Many individuals argue that birth parents are not subject to any form of assessment before deciding to have a child. This stands in contrast to the rigorous process, which includes comprehensive medical evaluations. The reason behind this thorough assessment is that adopted children often have specific needs stemming from traumatic experiences in their early lives. Therefore, prospective parents seeking to adopt or foster must meet specific physical and mental criteria to demonstrate their suitability for caring for and adopting children.
If you are having your medical virtually, you can arrange for your physical examination to be completed at your GP surgery by a nurse. These examinations consist of Urinalysis, BP tests, height and weight and a BMI assessment. All of these can be completed by a consultant nurse at your GP. When you receive the results, you can then scan a copy of the results to your agency, and they will submit this on your form.
Your GP practice is not the sole option for completing your medicals. Our services include the completion of the Adult Health Report 1, Adult Health Update Review 2, and Summary Report. Each appointment does have its own specific requirements, more details can be found on their respective categories on this page.
Currently, the majority of GP practices have a backlog with NHS work and are not undertaking non-NHS work.
If you are transferring agency, you will need to have your initial AH1 form re-completed. Each agency have their own specifications in line with the CoramBAAF guidance.
